Algebra Out Loud:  Students Read and Write to Learn and Communicate

Mathematics

Pat Mower, Washburn University

Too few students use their algebra texts effectively or efficiently. Moreover, students often struggle with the language of mathematics and are poor communicators of mathematics.  This talk will focus on remedies for this situation.

Over the years I have utilized reading and writing strategies to encourage students to communicate mathematics successfully.  This talk will focus on ten reading and writing strategies that have allowed my college algebra students to better understand and communicate the language of mathematics.  I have used these same strategies (with great success) in upper level course such as History of Mathematics and Modern Geometry, courses that help prepare students to be secondary mathematics teachers.

Participants at this session will receive a portfolio of successful reading and writing in algebra strategies and activities.  These activities can also be found in my book, Algebra Out Loud (Publisher:  Jossey-Bass.)  Also, the objectives and outcomes for using these activities in my courses will be discussed.
